Man hatte einen mehr als 3.000 Jahre alten Hausgrundriss entdeckt – ein für Norddeutschland seinerzeit Aufsehen erregender Fund. Mit der großflächigen Untersuchung musste jedoch noch eine Weile gewartet werden. 1987 wurden insgesamt 16 ha südlich der Stadt Hitzacker (Elbe) unter Grabungsschutz gestellt. So konnte die durch den Ausbau der Bundesstrasse und die Einrichtung des Hitzacker-Sees drohende Zerstörung des Fundplatzes gerade noch verhindert werden. Zugleich war damit der Weg für die Durchführung großflächiger archäologischer Ausgrabungen geebnet.
